Travertine hunt. Our exploration in the territories of the Empire

April 2025
On a clear and intense day, Neri and Angelo – pillars of our team – set off to visit some impressive travertine quarries, continuing a tradition that dates back millennia: like the ancient Romans, who traversed the entire Empire in search of the finest stones for temples, baths, and palaces, we too continue to carefully seek where nature has carved its wonder into the rock.
It is not just about purchasing raw material, but about meeting the stone at its place of origin, reading its patterns, listening to the stories that the veins tell.

Among the quarries visited, one in particular struck us with its grandeur.
Here, the naturally carved walls reach a height of over 85 meters: a quarry front that reads like an open book, where each layer reveals centuries of geological transformations, with material selections alternating between vein and cross-vein, offering a chromatic and structural range of great design interest.

Accompanied by the local extraction and commercial activity managers, Neri and Angelo conducted a thorough inspection of the available varieties: from the most compact and uniform travertine, perfect for extensive surfaces and flooring, to the one richer in contrasts, ideal for cladding, decorative walls, or unique furniture pieces. This attention to quality and origin is not just a professional choice, but a guiding principle: we select only what truly speaks the language of natural stone, with its noble imperfections, its authentic nuances, its material truth.

A touch of color, which is never missing from our trips: during the visit, a small crab fossil embedded in the stone was found – a gift from the earth, a living memory of the geological history that each block carries with it. A true “treasure,” reminding us that stone is never just material, but a witness of time.

And right at the edge of this journey, a reflection was born that often amuses our Turkish partners: we do not sell Turkish travertine: we select travertine from the territories of the Roman Empire. A play on words that contains a historical truth: the columns of the Pantheon itself, an iconic monument of Romanity, come from quarries located right in these lands.
