Stone and wood interiors in the Westkaai Towers designed by David Chipperfield

Architect Hans Verstuyft from the eponymous studio designed the interiors of a splendid penthouse located in one of the two towers designed by David Chipperfield at the port of Antwerp.

The two Westkaai Towers, intended for residential use, are located right on the waterfront of the historic Eilandje district, a project that is part of the redevelopment of the western pier of the Kattendijkdok area in Antwerp.

The architects’ intervention took place during a phase when structural work was still being completed, allowing them to address the entire layout. In particular, they took advantage of the 4.8-meter heights, focusing on the use of natural light and enhancing the stunning views.

The minimal and sober style typical of Verstuyft manifested in a distinctive layout that met the client’s needs. The need for privacy combined with the desire to create a study area aligns with the client’s great passion for art: a rich collection including works by Andy Warhol, Luc Tuymans, and Michaël Borremans that needed to be housed and showcased in the new setup.

The spaces are spacious and unified by the use of a neutral palette based on the use of Vicenza Stone and walnut wood, paired with plaster walls, metal details, and white fabrics.

The texture of the stone in the Grigio Alpi selection with a slightly brushed finish – supplied and processed by Grassi Pietre – ensured a harmonious and natural effect. In particular, the architect paired these coverings with custom-made wooden furniture such as the kitchen – including table and chairs – and the library wall in the living room, also in American walnut.

The project is based on the connection between spaces to create a fascinating “circulation” with surprising views. The study, bedroom, and bathroom, for example, are sequential to create a more intimate and private area.

The bathroom, decorated with the same stone selection in shades of gray and white, is defined by a central bathtub from which you can enjoy wonderful views through the large wall-to-wall windows.
The only concession to light tones are the bronze fittings and the lights used throughout the penthouse in metals of different tones. A refined and at the same time neutral environment, yet welcoming thanks to the not too harsh and not too soft tones of Grigio Alpi.

The final result is a perfect balance between minimal style and warmth, capable of creating spaces conducive to relaxation and private life.
