Renovation of a residence in downtown Toronto

A Tudor-style residence dating back to 1930 located in downtown Toronto was purchased by Don Evans and Susan Wilson, who decided to completely renovate it by entrusting the project to architect Paul Syme, who placed particular emphasis on the spacious kitchen and the marble-clad bathroom.

The detached house with two floors has been renovated and new elements have been added. The first intervention was to remove the gabled roof, and the existing masonry walls were extended to create a new parapet surrounding a new flat roof with extensive vegetation and solar hot water heating panels.

The existing porch was replaced by a masonry wall with a large window and a canopy made of dark anodized aluminum.

At the back of the house, an addition extends the living space and creates a rooftop terrace overlooking the master bedroom on the second floor. The garden is accessible through a wall of sliding glass doors with mahogany frames.

A characteristic of the design of this residence is the use of almost industrial durable materials and open spaces. The kitchen and living room are built around a large core of gray bricks, a space between the existing house and the new addition highlighted by the presence of the skylight of the fireplace.

The furnishings are a subtle mix of luxury and loft style, perfectly realized in the bathroom. Here, Syme covered the floor with Carrara marble that the owner found in a hardware store, strips 15 cm (6 inches) high used for door thresholds that were cut into tiles 45 cm (18 inches) long. Tiles that are considered of little value in the world of interior design but have contributed to making the environment precious.

The true luxury is the shower cabin illuminated from above, offering an experience similar to that of a spa. The glass shower panels are supported by stainless steel hardware. Along the wall, a Corian shelf.
