The meeting of professionalism and comfort
Villa Vittoria, a nineteenth-century building located on Viale Matteotti in Florence, was acquired by the Villa Donatello group and completely renovated to host a new area of the hospital clinic.
The intervention involved the total renovation of the entire building based on a project by architect Andrea Peruzzi. The work, given the state of neglect of the structure, lasted from 2012 to 2014 and was carried out by the Sire company of Florence, specializing in the renovation of historic buildings with high-quality finishes.
Before the intervention, the building was in a very degraded state due to neglect. Its history, dating from 1868 to 1871, intertwines with the birth of the Savonarola district and the new urban layout of the city, following the demolition of the ancient walls to make way for the new ring roads.
Initially, the structure was used for residential purposes, then it was transformed into a nursing home and used until the early 1990s. From that year until the start of the restoration work, the structure was left in a state of abandonment.
The choice of travertine
Villa Donatello is a private hospital facility whose goal, in addition to providing its patients with the best available medical professionals and related equipment, is to make the stay of its patients as comfortable as possible. For this reason, every detail had to be studied, not only functionally to medical needs but also aesthetically to offer the best comfort to patients.
The materials chosen had to be of high quality, capable of inducing well-being and relaxation, while respecting the historical architectural value of the structure.
This important requirement, presented to us by the designer, was met with the selection of Light Blend travertine (code PDR067). This material was chosen for all the public areas of the structure, for the bathrooms, and for the clinic floors.
The chosen color selection is a travertine with a beige background and light spots, bright and pleasant, and at the same time suitable for high-traffic areas.
The stairs and landings adjacent to them were made of gray basalt, a very hard and resistant material, yet evocative in the classic colors of the Florentine building tradition.
For this project, Pietre di Rapolano carried out surveys and measurements to prepare the executive drawings of the stairs and all the necessary special pieces. In addition to the drawings, to provide a complete service, a detailed list of the pieces shipped to the site was drawn up, with the position of the various elements in the individual boxes to simplify the installation process.
