Light cross-cut travertine

In the village of Casale Marittimo, within a historic building with a panoramic view of the Val di Cecina, a few kilometers from Bolgheri, an internal renovation was carried out by the Swiss architecture firm Sas Architecture, under the direction of architect Gaël Ginggen.

The firm called us to intervene with our materials in the central service block, creating a unified project in concept and aesthetic characteristics.

The architects from the Swiss firm in Lausanne, attentive and sensitive to the principles of ecological and sustainable architecture, chose to transform a space characterized by materials typical of historic construction, such as brick and wood, into a contemporary environment in harmony with the existing structure, using natural materials like light cross-cut travertine PDR040 ZEBRA CHIARA and other recycled materials.

The travertine peninsula as the focal point of the living area

For the kitchen, the architects selected the new Kungsbacka line by Ikea, just released on the market, resulting from a new project born from the collaboration between the Swedish giant and the Italian company 3b. The team from the two companies conceived a new material obtained from PET bottles collected from some Japanese cities.

In this case, the kitchen doors, made with a special laminate derived from recycled materials, are black with a matte finish.

A large equipped peninsula was designed in the central area of the kitchen; it is a box-type top in light cross-cut travertine, with a 10 cm edge, serving as a surface for washing and cooking food, as well as a breakfast counter.

Travertine is a material much loved by the homeowners, who have traditionally owned a surface of this material in previous properties to which many of their memories are tied.

For the flooring, a 30.5×91.5×1.2 cm format of PDR040 ZEBRA CHIARA, cut cross-cut, with a polished stucco finish, was chosen.

The travertine wall fifth

The space adjacent to the kitchen, used as an anteroom and shower, is also entirely covered with travertine of the same type PDR040 ZEBRA CHIARA. The tiles of the vertical coverings were mounted with a joint of a few millimeters, forming partitions with veins that repeat and chase each other, giving a continuous and homogeneous image to the entire area. The vein is marked and rather linear, and the final appearance is that of a monomaterial environment.

The custom-made travertine countertop, also in travertine, is recessed into a wall and designed as a single support surface with a large integrated sink. The owners needed a large space that could be enjoyed simultaneously by multiple family members. The walls were partially painted in salmon pink tones, with a washable paint that harmonizes well with the beige tones of the travertine, reflecting its colors.

For the lighting of this environment, linear LED lights hidden under the surface or in specially designed niches were used. The mirror is equipped with a backlighting system and is flanked by a spotlight with a two-joint adjustable arm (this is the Lampe de Marseille, the famous rationalist lamp designed by Le Corbusier for the Marseille apartment of 1949/52, reissued by Nemolighting).
