Masonry kitchen, clad in travertine
This kitchen is located in a house on the hill of Fiesole, above Florence.
The owners had found some old chestnut planks marked by time and wanted to use them to create the movable parts of the kitchen they were planning to build.
The image they had in mind was of a rustic kitchen that would blend well with the rural yet refined environment of the Florentine hills where their house stood. They needed a material capable of evoking these sensations: a connection with the earth and nature, but also elegance. All in a material that was also practical, easy to clean, and durable at the same time.

The masonry structure created was clad in 10×10 cm tumbled tiles (Ciottolo finish), a surface finish that simulates the aging of the material due to wear and time.

The color chosen for this kitchen is Terra Chiara (PDR013). The floor, cladding, and kitchen countertop are all made with the same color selection. The finishes of the various surfaces are differentiated according to their intended use and the desired aesthetic effect.

The floor has a Campagna finish. This finish features tiles with chipped edges and a merely polished surface. The characteristic holes of the travertine are left open. This finish enhances the features of this magnificent stone, especially using this color selection.

For the kitchen countertop, the Modern finish was chosen, which involves fine polishing of the material’s surface and filling the holes. This makes the material easier to clean. For the cladding, as previously mentioned, the Ciottolo finish was used.
The final effect is decidedly striking, also thanks to the antique chestnut wood reused for the drawers and doors.
