Local materials for a modern farmhouse in Ostuni
A modern farmhouse in Puglia with traditional influences is the project by Andrew Trotter, architect and founder of Openhouse Magazine, for his friend Carlo Lanzini. The Masseria Moroseta is located in Ostuni in an area cultivated with almost 500 hectares of olive trees.
The architect created a modern version of the typical Apulian farmhouse using local materials, traditional construction methods, and details of local architecture.

Today, the Masseria is a farm that produces organic olive oil, and the six suites that open onto private courtyards and interiors are available for visitors.

The bright atmosphere that permeates the entire structure is complemented by a sophisticated decor where vintage pieces coexist with modern design elements. The vaulted ceilings and typical Apulian limestone floors (known as “chianche”) keep the interiors cool even in the hot months.

The furnishings are a mix of rustic and designer pieces, such as the reclaimed dining table and the Ghost sofa by Paola Navone. Trotter used local sandstone, of limestone origin, throughout the house, both indoors and outdoors.

Trotter worked with London designer Anouska Hempel, and her influence is evident in this rustic yet minimal style rich in details. As in the bathrooms, where marble and stone sinks recovered from an old laundry were used, and the plumbing is simple with exposed copper components. Like the rustic shower with terracotta tiles.

In the bedroom, the headboard is decorated with majolica tiles with a graphic effect. This is paired with a small black table and an Ikea Forsa lamp. The bedrooms open onto private courtyards with green corners.
In other rooms, wrought iron beds are used, paired with reclaimed wood furniture and desks, and textiles in soft tones.

The appearance is homogeneous with courtyards paved in crushed gravel. Natural materials are the common thread throughout the composition, creating an environment integrated with the surroundings and with a relaxing and modern atmosphere.
