How to Use Bouclé in Decor: The Guide

As our architecture and interiors increasingly progress towards modern forms, curves and the feeling of comfort are becoming an important trend in decor.

bouclé

If there’s one fabric we’re truly excited about in this regard, it’s bouclé, a super soft material that dominates all our Pinterest and Instagram feeds and shows no signs of slowing down in the world of interior design. The bouclé revival in general happened about 2 years ago, and we’ve seen it hit the market at industry events: it’s a versatile and easy-to-shape fabric, so we’re sure it will continue to be a favorite in homes. Most bouclés are available in simple block colors, making them easy to integrate into many living room styles.

But what is bouclé?

The word bouclé derives from the French word meaning “curled” and can refer to both yarns made with twisted fibers and fabrics woven with bouclé yarns. Although traditionally made from wool, bouclé can also be made from polyester, linen, cotton, silk, and other materials.

Where to Start

Sometimes going all-in with an emerging trend is simply not feasible, because you might not be ready to spend large sums (because yes, there are many interior design enthusiasts on a budget). If you’re not sure bouclé will work in your space, you can start small. Use it in cushions and sofa covers to add a layer of warmth to your living room without the commitment of new furniture, and feel free to play with different colors: this is a good way to gain confidence with new textures.

What to Pair It With

Although bouclé is a trendy fabric, its block colors make it truly versatile to pair with other textures. To do it well, contrast the tactile details with smooth, flat-finish decorative elements. Looking at the photo below, the caramel tones of the cushions help bring this white shade into warmer territory, enhancing the effect with a wool rug for a soft look.

And remember that a material like marble can always be the right choice: both neutral and colored pieces work with anything, from wood finishes to textured upholstery. A general rule for decorating the living room is that marble coffee tables look great next to neutral-toned seating… choosing them in bouclé.

Where It Works Best

Flatter and more squared shapes highlight the textures of the details of a bouclé sofa in a slightly different way. This shape combined with the fabric creates a contemporary element that feels at home even in a traditional room like the one depicted above; we are big fans of how this fabric adds a distinctive feel to modular furniture and sharper silhouettes.

Relaxing Corners

We have already talked about creating feature corners and this trend suits us. Add a bouclé item to your living room for an updated and contemporary look that’s a bit different from the norm, find a chair in this fabric, pair it with a coffee table and a floor lamp to create a truly unforgettable reading nook
